Thompson residents who travel along Thompson Drive will need to find another route on Friday, June 19, 2026. The City of Thompson has announced a road closure for that day to carry out planned work on the major thoroughfare.
The city posted the closure notice on its News and Notices page on June 17, giving drivers two days to plan ahead. Thompson Drive runs past key destinations like the Thompson General Hospital at 871 Thompson Drive South and a number of businesses along its north section. Anyone heading to these spots on June 19 should expect detours and delays.
This closure is part of an ongoing push to upgrade roads across Thompson. Back in 2021, the city got a $33.3 million joint funding boost from the federal and provincial governments to fix up roughly 20 kilometres of crumbling streets. Thompson Drive was already on the repair list in 2023 as part of the summer paving program, alongside Juniper Drive, Fox Bay, and others.
The timing means the closure will overlap with the Nickel Days festival running June 18 to 21 at the TRCC. Festival organizers and attendees should allow extra travel time and watch for alternate routes. Local businesses along the closed stretch may see delivery and parking hiccups. The city’s notice did not mention any emergency detours for the hospital.
