Beaumont, Alberta is under a water emergency after heavy rainfall overwhelmed the city’s wastewater system, triggering an Alberta Emergency Alert on June 21, 2026. The City of Beaumont is asking all 26,300 residents to immediately stop all non-essential water use as localized flooding and sewer backups are already happening in some neighbourhoods.
The emergency alert came at 12:36 p.m. after more than a day of steady downpours that have dumped over a month’s worth of rain across the Edmonton region. Environment Canada says the area has already seen over 189 mm of rain this June, tying for the second-wettest June on record and the most rain the region has seen in over 60 years. “If the wastewater system continues to operate over-capacity, flooding and sewer backups will continue to increase,” city officials said. Residents are being told to avoid showers, toilet flushing, laundry, dishwashing, and any outdoor water use.
The city has opened its Emergency Operations Centre and closed the Sport and Recreation Centre for Monday and Tuesday to take pressure off the system. Crews have barricaded flooded pathways where stormwater ponds reached their limit, and officials are warning people to stay clear of manhole covers that could pop loose from the surging water and air pressure below. Mayor Lisa Vanderkwaak delivered a blunt message: “Right now I am asking every single Beaumont resident to immediately cut all non-essential water use. Taking pressure off the infrastructure right now is the fastest way that we can prevent further backups across the community.”
Beaumont is not alone. Several other communities around Edmonton, including St. Albert, Morinville, Stony Plain, and Leduc County, have also issued their own water conservation alerts as the same storm system pushes their wastewater plants to the brink.
The emergency alert remains active through the evening, and more rain is forecast for the area through Monday. The city says it will provide updates as conditions change, but for now the message is clear: every flush and every shower is adding to the problem.
