Barrhead families can get an early look inside Barrhead Composite High School before classes begin, as the school hosts a back-to-school BBQ and open house on August 27, 2026. The event runs from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and gives parents and students a chance to tour the building, meet teachers, and learn about programs for the upcoming year.
With the 2026-27 school year starting on August 31, the timing lets families use the information they gather to prepare for the first day of classes. The school office will also be open extended hours, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., making it easier for parents to drop by and ask questions.
The event comes during a major $55-million modernization and right-sizing project that began in July 2025 and is expected to finish in summer 2028. Phase one of that construction, which includes expanding the east gym and updating junior high classrooms, is scheduled for completion in spring 2026. The work will eventually shrink the school’s capacity from 1,227 to 820 students, matching a projected enrollment decline to about 664 by the 2027-28 school year.
The school served approximately 737 students in grades 7 through 12 in 2023-24 and is part of the Pembina Hills School Division, based in Barrhead, Alberta.
