A section of the Galloping Goose Regional Trail in Colwood, B.C. will close for three days in July while crews complete paving work as part of a larger trail-widening project. The closure is scheduled for July 14 through July 16, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day.
The work zone runs southwest of the new Colwood overpass, between the overpass and the intersection of Ocean Boulevard and Belmont Road. Trail users should plan ahead and find alternate routes during those hours, as the popular route will be inaccessible through the area.
The 55-kilometre trail sees heavy use year round. Regional trails recorded 4.4 million visits in 2025, and about 80 percent of users on the Goose are cyclists. Near Wale Road in Colwood, an automated counter logged more than 270,000 trips between March 2024 and March 2025, averaging about 1,000 people a day.
The CRD says the short-term closures are necessary to make the trail safer and more comfortable as demand keeps climbing. Crews have been coordinating with other agencies, including BC Hydro and the City of Victoria, to bundle several infrastructure jobs together and limit how often the trail has to shut down.
Colwood’s new pedestrian and cycling bridge over Sooke Road opened in April 2026, giving trail users a safer way across the busy highway. The July closure will affect the trail immediately southwest of that new bridge.
