Stouffville is in for a stretch of sunny and hot weather through the middle of the week, with temperatures climbing well above seasonal norms. Environment Canada forecasts highs of 28 to 29 degrees Celsius Monday through Wednesday, and when humidity is factored in, it will feel more like 34 to 35. No weather alerts are currently in effect, but a very high UV index of 9 is expected each day through Tuesday.
The normal high for this time of year in Stouffville is about 26 degrees, making this week’s conditions roughly two to three degrees warmer than average. Overnight lows will range from 14 to 19 degrees, with Wednesday night being the warmest at 19.
With the UV index reaching 9, Environment Canada is advising residents to take sun safety precautions. That means reducing time in the sun, especially between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., and seeking shade when outdoors. Wearing a broad-brimmed hat, long sleeves, wrap-around sunglasses, and broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher is recommended.
The heat follows an intense Canada Day heat wave that pushed temperatures in the Toronto area to historic levels. Pearson Airport recorded 35.9 degrees at 4 p.m. on July 1, the warmest Canada Day since 1931, with humidex values near 48. Climatologist David Phillips warns that the first heat wave of summer is often the most dangerous because people have not yet gotten used to extreme heat, and prolonged hot spells make it harder for the body to recover.
A slight cooldown is possible by Thursday and Friday, when there is a 30 percent chance of showers and highs drop to between 26 and 28 degrees. Mostly sunny conditions are expected to return for the weekend. In the meantime, those working or spending time outside should take extra care, and residents may also want to plan around ongoing road construction. York Region has several projects active in Whitchurch-Stouffville this month, including rehabilitation work on Stouffville Road between Highway 404 and Highway 48, which runs from June through August.
