Residents of Standoff, Alberta, are invited to a community barbecue hosted by Blood Tribe Housing on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, as part of the Kainai Powwow & Celebration. The event will take place at 12:00 p.m. at the Blood Tribe Housing facility, offering a chance to connect with housing staff and neighbours during the week-long festivities.
The barbecue is one of many meals organized by Blood Tribe Administration departments during the powwow, which runs from July 14 to July 19 at Red Crow Park. The housing department’s event comes right after a groundbreaking ceremony for a new housing building, scheduled for 11:00 a.m. the same day at Blood Tribe Housing.
According to the schedule of breakfasts and barbecues, the housing department’s barbecue is one of several community meals hosted by different departments throughout the celebration. The powwow draws participants from across North America for traditional dancing, singing, rodeo, and cultural activities.
Blood Tribe Housing, led by Director Cody Wells, has been active in addressing local housing needs. The department is currently working on several major projects, including 20 new affordable units under the National Housing Strategy and renovations on 200 units, with 170 already completed. It also operates its own construction plant, a unique capability among First Nations in Canada.
