Beausejour families can look forward to a mid-July filled with free art and science fun for children at the Brokenhead River Regional Library. The library is hosting three hands-on programs open to young residents at no cost.
On July 15, an Art Day workshop runs from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. for kids ages 6 to 12. The afternoon offers artistic activities, but space is limited and registration is required. Parents can call the library at 204-268-7570 to sign up.
Two science sessions follow on July 17, delivered by WISE Kid-Netic Energy, the outreach program from the University of Manitoba’s Price Faculty of Engineering. From 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., an Indigenous Structures workshop explores engineering concepts aligned with the Manitoba school curriculum for grades 3 through 7. Then, from noon to 1:00 p.m., a Manitoba Safari session dives into local animals, including a hands-on owl dissection.
WISE Kid-Netic instructors are university students in science, technology, engineering, or education, offering positive role models for young participants. Founded in 1990, the non-profit reaches roughly 30,000 Manitoba youth each year through workshops, camps, and clubs, and is a member of the national Actua network.
Library services remain free for residents and property owners in the Rural Municipality of Brokenhead, the Town of Beausejour, and students of local schools. Head Librarian Ashley Myers leads the library, located at 427 Park Avenue.
The summer programs add another option for families during school break, part of a wider push by Manitoba libraries to offer activities including arts, cultural programming, and science. A recent provincial directory compiled by the Public Library Services Branch highlighted similar opportunities across the region.
