A home was fully engulfed in flames when volunteer firefighters arrived in the Rural Municipality of Brokenhead on Thursday evening, but crews managed the blaze without needing outside help.
The Beausejour Brokenhead Fire Department responded to the call on July 9, 2026, and found the structure already consumed by fire. The department, made up of 28 paid-on-call members, serves the Town of Beausejour and surrounding communities like Garson and Tyndall.
Despite the rural location not having nearby fire hydrants, the department did not require mutual aid from the East Selkirk Fire Department. The department has modern equipment, including a 2024 Freightliner Engine and a 2010 Freightliner tanker that holds 1,665 Imperial gallons, which helped crews work through the night.
Firefighters were on scene late and returned home just before 1 a.m. The department later thanked the Oakbank and Beausejour RCMP, Shared Health emergency medical services, and the RM of Brokenhead Public Works for their help.
This fire comes during a busy summer for emergency services across the province. Manitoba is under a state of emergency with 127 active wildfires and 196 total fires to date as of late June, well above the seasonal average of 156 total fires for this time of year.
