The Town of Antigonish has rescheduled the Canada Day fireworks for Wednesday, July 29, at Columbus Field in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, after wind forced their cancellation on July 1. The fireworks will begin at dusk, around 9 p.m., as part of the revived Music on Main free concert series.
With the new date now set, families and local businesses that rely on the holiday event can plan to gather at the field at 121 Main Street. The evening will begin with live music at 6 p.m., headlined by merimac and opened by Our Fathers Fools. The fireworks will cap the night just after sunset.
The original Canada Day display was called off because windy conditions made it unsafe. Pairing the fireworks with Music on Main gives the celebration a second life, according to a statement from the town. The concert series, organized by the Antigonish Tourism Association and the Antigonish Visitor Information Centre, is returning after a nearly decade-long break. The last Music on Main took place in 2017.
The three-night series continues on August 12 with The Barra MacNeils and Ceilidhmen, and on August 26 with a headliner still to be announced. All shows are free and open to the public.
The town noted that the fireworks display is still subject to weather and any provincial fire restrictions in place on July 29. Columbus Field is owned by the Knights of Columbus, Antigonish, Council 1105, which purchased the land in the late 1940s. The field has hosted community events like the Antigonish Highland Games for decades.
