The forecast calls for a 30 percent chance of showers late Monday afternoon, along with a risk of thunderstorms. Winds from the north will pick up near noon, gusting up to 40 km/h before easing overnight. The daytime high will reach 25°C, but it will feel closer to 28 with the humidity. Overnight, the temperature will drop to 14°C under mainly cloudy skies.
Wildfire smoke drifting into the area from fires in northern Saskatchewan and Manitoba is expected to stick around through Tuesday morning. The Air Quality Health Index for the Calgary region, which includes Chestermere, is forecast to climb from Low Risk to Moderate Risk levels of 5 to 6 Monday afternoon and remain there through Tuesday night. That means the air could be especially tough on seniors, children, pregnant people, and anyone with breathing issues like asthma.
Health experts warn there is no safe level of exposure to the fine particles in wildfire smoke, which can harm lungs and hearts even when you can’t see or smell it. Residents are advised to limit outdoor activities during the smokiest periods and consider using a HEPA air cleaner indoors.
