Chestermere, AB – Two Chestermere schools are among nine across Rocky View Schools set to receive new classroom support teams after trustees approved an additional $3.08 million in provincial funding at a special meeting on August 10, 2026.
Chestermere Lake Middle School and Chestermere High School will each get a Classroom Complexity Team, which adds dedicated teachers and educational assistants to help students with diverse learning needs. The teams are funded through the province’s Class Size and Complexity Grant for the 2026/27 school year.
According to Rocky View Schools, most of the money will be used to hire teachers and educational assistants, with remaining funds going toward specialized behavioural services, professional learning, and emerging student needs.
The funding was first announced by the Alberta government on July 3, 2026, and expands the classroom complexity program to include support for Grade 7 to 12 students. This latest allocation brings Rocky View Schools’ total Class Size and Complexity Grant funding for 2026/27 to more than $6.6 million, adding to an initial $3.6 million approved earlier this year.
Superintendent Ryan Reed said the extra dollars required budget adjustments and gave school divisions flexibility to place teams where they were most needed. The investment supports the division’s 2026-2030 Strategic Plan priorities of equipping students for success and fostering optimal learning environments.
The new teams are part of a broader provincial effort to address classroom complexity. In February 2026, Alberta released data showing more than 4,000 classrooms across the province were classified as highly complex due to student density, learning challenges, and chronic behavioural issues.
