Taber, Alberta, is gearing up for a lively summer after town council gave the green light to support two big festivals at its July 20 meeting. Council approved in-kind requests from organizers of the Cornstock ’26 classic rock festival and the long-running Taber Cornfest, ensuring both events have the municipal backing they need to succeed.
Cornstock ’26 runs July 23 to 25 at the Ken McDonald Sports Complex and nearby Legion Park and Legion Youth Center, just days after council’s decision. The three-day festival, put on by Spider Entertainment Group, brings major Canadian classic rock acts like Colin James, Big Wreck, 54-40, Streetheart, Headpins, and Honeymoon Suite to town. Organizers say it draws a big crowd, with about half of attendees coming from outside Alberta, some travelling up to 12 hours. That means a major boost for local hotels, restaurants, and shops.
Later in the summer, the Taber and District Chamber of Commerce hosts the annual Taber Cornfest from August 27 to 29 in Confederation Park. Billed as Western Canada’s largest free family festival, Cornfest celebrates the town’s famous corn with live entertainment, a parade, a car show, and plenty of sweet corn for everyone. The festival has been a local tradition for decades and relies on town support to keep activities free and accessible.
Town council’s in-kind help can include things like facility access, equipment, and staff time, all through programs like the Community Vibrancy Grant Program. With Cornstock starting almost immediately after the vote, the quick approval was key for final preparations. For Cornfest, the support helps organizers plan another big weekend of family fun in the park.
Both festivals put Taber on the map as a summer destination, bringing tourism dollars and community pride. As council noted, backing these events helps make Taber a vibrant place to live and visit. With the rock festival just around the corner and Cornfest not far behind, the town is ready for a busy season of music, food, and celebration.
