The Town of Hanover’s annual watermain flushing program gets underway on August 4, 2026, and will continue for about three weeks. This routine maintenance removes sediment from the municipal water distribution system and helps keep the water quality reliable across the community.
During flushing crews push water through pipes at high speed and discharge it through fire hydrants. This stirs up mineral deposits and sediment that naturally build up inside the pipes over time. Residents may notice temporary reddish discolouration in their tap water while the work is happening in their area.
The town says the water remains safe to drink even if it looks discoloured, but residents should run a cold water tap until it clears before using washing machines or dishwashers. Reducing water use while flushing is taking place nearby can also help limit the amount of sediment that enters home plumbing.
Watermain flushing follows best practices laid out in Ontario’s Drinking Water Quality Management Standard and is carried out by public works staff as part of regular infrastructure upkeep. The Town of Hanover reminds residents the program is a standard measure to protect long-term water quality and system performance.
