West of 22 Productions celebrated the official opening of its expanded film facility in Didsbury, Alberta, with a ribbon cutting on Canada Day and a community open house, which the Mountain View Regional Film Office highlighted in a July 22 social media post. The 6,000-square-foot studio at 1602 27th Avenue is now the only full-service production space with a sound stage and green screen in Alberta outside Calgary and Edmonton.
The facility includes a 20-foot green screen and sound stage, a 1,900-square-foot audio room, a 1,200-square-foot saloon-themed event space, and a 1,680-square-foot upstairs section. Founder Sterling Toews first dreamed up the idea while filming the series Lake Chasers back in 2013. His daughter Rebecca Berglund now runs daily operations as director of operations.
This expansion gives film and TV crews a place to work without leaving the Mountain View region, which has already hosted major productions like Fargo, The Order, Wynonna Earp, and Under the Banner of Heaven. Productions shooting here can tap into Alberta’s rural film tax incentive, which adds an extra boost on top of the standard credit.
The Mountain View Regional Film Office, a partnership between Didsbury, Sundre, and Mountain View County, formed in 2023 as Alberta’s first rural film office. It has since won awards for its creative approach to economic development, helping draw more productions to the area. With the new West of 22 Productions facility now open, the region is better equipped than ever to compete for film projects looking for small-town settings and full production support close to Calgary.
