The Tillsonburg District Chamber of Commerce is rallying behind a province-wide pushback after the United States unveiled a sweeping new round of tariffs on Canadian goods. The Ontario Chamber of Commerce condemned the move on July 20, 2026, and the local chamber is now warning its members that the added costs could squeeze manufacturers right here in Tillsonburg, Ontario.
The U.S. plans to apply 50-percent additional tariffs on more than $20 billion worth of Canadian products. The list runs to over 500 items and includes wine, hockey sticks, dairy products, and cement. These duties are set to take effect on August 19, 2026, and they will cover goods that were previously shielded under the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement.
Daniel Tisch, president and CEO of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce, called the escalation ‘another needless, reckless escalation in Trump’s unilateral trade war.’ He added, ‘Canadian and American businesses alike are tired of this endless cycle of threats, retaliation, and uncertainty. Tariffs are taxes on growth.’ The provincial chamber represents 60,000 members through 143 local chambers across Ontario, including the Tillsonburg District Chamber of Commerce.
The new tariffs arrive at a difficult moment for Tillsonburg. Much of the town’s workforce is tied to manufacturing, and 82 percent of those jobs are in high-tech or advanced manufacturing. With easy access to U.S. markets along the 401 and 403 corridors, many local firms rely on cross-border trade to stay competitive. Earlier this year, warning of the impact of expanded U.S. Section 232 tariffs on steel and aluminum, Tillsonburg District Chamber CEO Rocio Salinas said bluntly, ‘For Tillsonburg’s manufacturing-driven economy, these tariffs are an immediate roadblock that disrupts the flow of goods and undermines our community’s competitive edge.’
Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada has put forward ‘a series of detailed and comprehensive proposals to resolve this dispute and to modernise CUSMA’ and stands ready to intensify discussions in the weeks ahead. He added that Canada will ‘work relentlessly and take any measures necessary to build our strength at home.’ Ontario Premier Doug Ford went further, posting on social media: ‘If these tariffs proceed, Canada should respond tariff for tariff, dollar for dollar.’
