Town of Grimsby public works crews are clearing catch basins and debris from roadways today as heavy rainfall and a severe thunderstorm warning hit the community.
Environment Canada issued a warning for the St. Catharines, Grimsby and Northern Niagara Region on July 21, 2026, with hazards including wind gusts up to 90 km/h and quarter-size hail. The heavy rainfall has led to localized flooding, leaving some streets under water as crews work to manage the high volumes of rainwater moving through the stormwater system.
“Following today’s significant rainfall, Town of Grimsby Public Works crews are actively responding to localized flooding and stormwater issues across the community,” the Town said. “Crews are monitoring conditions, clearing catch basins, removing debris from roadways, and working to manage the high volumes of rainwater moving through the stormwater system.”
Residents are asked to stay away from fast-moving water and not drive through flooded roads. If you have a flooded basement or need help with a municipal storm issue, call the Town of Grimsby Operations Centre at 905-945-9201.
Homeowners can also help by safely clearing leaves and debris from catch basins near their property, which lets water drain faster and reduces local ponding.
The Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority is updating floodplain maps for several Grimsby creeks, work that hasn’t been done in more than 25 years. The Town is also spending $20 million on capital projects in 2026, with $7.3 million going to a project that cuts unnecessary wastewater flows during storms.
