Tillsonburg, Ontario, residents got their first chance to weigh in on a proposed new sportsfield complex during an open house on July 23 at the Town of Tillsonburg Community Centre in the Marwood Lounge. The Public Information Centre showed conceptual plans for a multi-field facility that could help meet growing demand for baseball, softball, soccer, and tennis and pickleball courts.
The proposed complex would sit on 36 acres of town-owned land at 67 Mall Road, built out in three phases. Drawings include four baseball and softball diamonds, three soccer fields, and tennis and pickleball courts. The Town has set aside $6.3 million for land purchase, investigations, and development at the site, which was bought in April 2024.
If the sportsfield complex becomes a reality, the existing Annandale Diamonds at 160 Concession Street East could be turned into housing, greenspace, and trail connections. A recent Recreation Master Plan found Tillsonburg needs one more hardball diamond and four more softball diamonds to keep up with current and future demand, and could eventually need as many as eight diamonds.
Mayor Deb Gilvesy stressed that no decisions have been made yet. “These discussions are about planning for Tillsonburg’s future,” she said. “We need to consider how recreation, housing, greenspace, and municipal services can best support residents over the long term. This engagement process will help Council understand community priorities before any future decisions are considered.”
Residents who missed the July 23 session can still share their thoughts. Two more Public Information Centres are planned: August 13 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and September 9 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Locations for those sessions will be announced at a later date. The Town is also offering an online community survey for those who cannot attend in person.
