The very first Pitt Meadows Blueberry Festival is coming to šxʷhék̓ʷnəs (Spirit Square) on Sunday, August 9, 2026, from 10am to 3pm. The community event at 11985 Harris Road will celebrate the city’s deep blueberry roots with fresh local berries, vendors, live music, and family activities.
Co-hosted by the Pitt Meadows Farmers Market and the City of Pitt Meadows, the festival promises “all things blueberry.” Visitors can expect a farmer’s market atmosphere alongside entertainment and hands-on fun designed for all ages.
The celebration taps into a proud local history. Pitt Meadows contributes to 20 percent of British Columbia’s total blueberry crop and ranks sixth among BC municipalities in agricultural production. Blueberry farming took root here in the late 1940s, when pioneer John Kildahl Austring started the Blue Boy Blueberry Company. His son Oscar later helped form the B.C. Blueberry Cooperative Association and launched the original Blueberry Field Day festival on the family farm in 1957, a tradition that included a Blueberry Queen contest and carried on for decades.
Spirit Square, whose Katzie First Nation name means “the place to remember him, her, it, them,” sits in the civic centre near City Hall, the recreation centre, and the library. It already hosts the weekly farmers market on Tuesdays from June through September, making it a natural fit for this new summer highlight.
Residents can look forward to a day rooted in one of the community’s signature crops. With 78 percent of Pitt Meadows land in the Agricultural Land Reserve, the blueberry is more than a local favourite—it is a cornerstone of the area’s identity.
