Construction started today, July 24, on three new road safety projects in Lethbridge, bringing a rapid flashing beacon crosswalk to Garry Drive West and permanent medians to two other intersections. The City of Lethbridge says the upgrades are part of its yearly intersection improvement work and are meant to make walking and driving safer.
The work at Garry Drive West near West Highlands Centre will put in overhead rapid rectangular flashing beacons to make the crosswalk more visible for pedestrians. That project is expected to wrap up by August 21, 2026.
At Tudor Boulevard and Kings Crescent South, a temporary median will be turned into a permanent one, with completion aimed for August 7, 2026. A similar upgrade at Fairmont Boulevard South and Fairmont Gate South is scheduled to finish by August 21, 2026.
Ahmed Ali, the city’s Transportation Engineering Manager, says these projects come from the annual program that looks at safety needs case by case. “Everyone wants to live in a community where they feel safe to walk, drive and bike safely,” Ali said. “Community feedback is important in developing how we plan for the future when it comes to road safety and mobility.”
The city said drivers should watch for signs and could see minor delays, but traffic disruptions should be small. The upgrades are part of the city’s Transportation Safety Plan, which has a goal of zero traffic deaths and major injuries by 2040.
