Bridgewater-area residents in District 9 will be heading to the polls this fall to choose a new municipal representative. The Municipality of the District of Lunenburg held a special council meeting on August 4, 2026, to start the process of filling the seat left empty when Councillor Ben Brooks resigned on July 14.
Brooks, who was first elected in October 2024 with 578 votes, stepped down effective immediately. Under the province’s Municipal Elections Act, council had four weeks from the vacancy to name a day for a special election. At the August 4 meeting, dates and appointments for the by-election were set, though the exact election day has not yet been publicly announced.
District 9 covers communities like Riverport, LaHave, and Petite Riviere. Until a new councillor is chosen, Deputy Mayor Chasidy Veinotte is the point of contact for residents needing municipal support. Veinotte represents District 10 and was elected by acclamation in 2024.
The winner of the upcoming by-election will serve the remainder of Brooks’ term, which runs until October 2028. In the 2024 race, Brooks defeated challenger Dean Schmeisser, who received 467 votes. It is not yet known who might put their name forward for the fall vote.
