The annual Guelph Fringe Festival is underway from August 6 to 9, bringing 45 performances to three downtown venues in Guelph, Ontario. Fifteen independent productions are taking part in the four-day event, offering a mix of improv comedy, storytelling, and children’s theatre in non-traditional spaces turned into intimate mini-theatres.
The Guelph Fringe Festival is a boutique performing arts festival that uses cafes and community spots rather than conventional stages. Venues seat just 40 to 60 people, creating an up-close experience for audiences. Tickets are $15, with all $15 going directly to the artists, plus a $3 festival fee to cover operational costs. This follows the fringe model where 100 per cent of the ticket price supports performers.
Coordinated by Paul Barson of The Downtown Theatre Project, the festival was revived in 2022 after a hiatus. Barson, who also serves on the board of the Guelph Arts Council, helped bring it back through a volunteer effort with local artists and theatre lovers.
This year’s lineup includes Fireflies on the Fringe, a free children’s program at Riverside Park on August 7 from 3 to 7:30 p.m. Geared toward kids up to age 12, the shows feature professional and emerging artists in a relaxed outdoor setting.
As a member of the Canadian Association of Fringe Festivals, the Guelph event uses a non-juried lottery to select performers, giving all applicants an equal shot. The full schedule and tickets are available on the festival website.
