The Innisfail Triathlon will not take place this September, marking the end of a community tradition that spanned over two decades.
The decision to cancel the 2026 event was announced with mixed emotion by the Innisfail Triathlon committee. Organizers said the race is no longer viable due to ongoing low registration numbers, and they will not be hosting it going forward.
Registration has already closed, and full refunds are being processed for all registered participants. The announcement signals the permanent end of an event that began in 1998 and ran for more than 20 years.
The triathlon was designed as a fun, community event for beginners and those looking to finish off their season. It featured a sprint course with a 750-metre swim, a 20-kilometre bike ride, and a five-kilometre run. An entry-level “tri-it” race for children and families was also offered to introduce newcomers to the sport.
Despite the cancellation, some third-party event calendars still list the Innisfail Triathlon for September 12 at the Innisfail Aquatic Centre. This appears to be outdated information, as the official website clearly states the event is cancelled.
The Innisfail Aquatic Centre, which would have hosted the swim portion, reopened in April 2026 after a $15 million modernization. However, even the upgraded facility could not offset the declining participation that led to the end of the long-running event.
