The City of Grande Prairie is offering free Transit Discovery Tours on September 16 and September 18, 2026, to help residents learn how to use public transit. The guided, hands-on sessions are designed to build practical skills and confidence for anyone unfamiliar with bus routes, fares, or trip planning.
Each tour begins and ends at the Grande Prairie Public Library and includes an indoor Transit 101 session where participants can ask questions. After that, the group boards a bus for a guided ride that covers fares, passes, transfers, trip planning, accessibility features, requesting stops, and navigating the Town Centre Mall Transit Hub.
Two dates are available: Wednesday, September 16 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. and Friday, September 18 from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Registration is required and can be done online or by calling 311.
The tours also incorporate the Passport to Grande Prairie program. Along the route, participants will discover community organizations, hear directly from representatives about their services, and collect Passport stamps at participating stops.
Mayor Jackie Clayton said the Transit Discovery Tour is about giving residents knowledge and confidence to make community connections. “Being able to get around your community independently opens the door to so much more, whether that’s accessing services, getting to work or school, or taking part in community life,” Mayor Clayton said. “The Transit Discovery Tour is about giving residents the knowledge and confidence to make those connections and helping them feel more at home in Grande Prairie.”
Grande Prairie Transit has operated since 1981 and currently runs nine fixed bus routes, on-demand transit services, and paratransit across the city. The tours follow a similar youth-focused initiative called GP Transit Quest, a free transit scavenger hunt for youth ages 6 to 17 that ran throughout August 2026.
