Greater Victoria School District families can expect a smooth return to class on September 8, according to a back-to-school update from the Board of Education released August 28, 2026.
“Together, we all look forward to welcoming students and families back to school on September 8,” the Board wrote in its first direct communication to families since being reinstated in May.
The update acknowledged that Superintendent Deb Whitten and other senior leadership team members have gone on leave. The Board said it cannot discuss the details of the leaves.
The Board also revealed it has discovered concerning changes made during its 16-month dismissal. “We have learned that key Board policies, reporting directives, and procedures safeguarding fiscal responsibility, accountability, and student safety were rescinded or altered in our absence, with no rationale provided to us,” the message reads.
The Board expressed concern about possible financial benefits provided to individuals who opposed its stance on School Police Liaison Officers, and transactions occurring outside normal operating processes.
The Board’s turmoil began in January 2025, when BC Education Minister Lisa Beare fired all nine trustees after they voted to remove police liaison officers from schools. The trustees were reinstated on May 25, 2026, after the province conceded a court case following late disclosure of text messages between ministry officials and Victoria police.
Families in View Royal, part of Trustee Electoral Area 3 (Highlands/View Royal), will elect one trustee in the October 17, 2026 general local election.
