Innisfail Town Council approved a plan on August 24, 2026 to convert the school zone on 52 Avenue between 42 Street and 47 Street into a playground zone. The change will mean a 30 km/h speed limit is in effect every day from 8:30 a.m. until one hour after sunset, rather than only during school hours on school days.
The decision comes after a review of the intersection at 42 Street and 52 Avenue. That review also identified the need for a town-wide inventory of playground and school zone signage, as well as an assessment of traffic signal upgrades.
The affected stretch of 52 Avenue is a high-traffic arterial road. It is also the location of École John Wilson Elementary School, which serves about 400 students from Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 4. Council heard that playground zones provide more consistent protection for children throughout the year, especially since the school grounds are used outside of regular class time.
During the same meeting, Council directed administration to include funding for traffic signal upgrades, LED traffic light conversions, and playground signage improvements in the 2027 budget process. Innisfail RCMP have identified traffic safety as a strategic priority for 2026.
The town will consider these items during budget deliberations scheduled for November 17 to 19, 2026. The playground zone conversion is expected to be implemented in 2026, according to council highlights from the Town of Innisfail.
