Grande Prairie Police wrapped up their first joint commercial vehicle enforcement operation in late August, and the results show why they launched it. The six-hour blitz south of the airport pulled nearly two dozen trucks off the road for serious safety problems, including one driver caught behind the wheel of a loaded fuel tanker after drinking.

The August 21 operation, run with Grande Prairie Enforcement Services and Alberta’s Sheriff Highway Patrol, inspected 23 commercial vehicles. Officers found 45 safety or regulatory violations, forced 18 vehicles out of service until repairs were made, and handed out 12 provincial tickets.

More than 50 drivers were given roadside alcohol screening. One driver received an Immediate Roadside Sanction under Alberta’s zero-tolerance rule for commercial drivers. That driver was operating a fully loaded truck carrying fuel products, with a gross vehicle weight of about 63,500 kilograms.

“This operation demonstrates the value of collaboration between public safety partners and our shared commitment to keeping Alberta’s roadways safe,” said GPPS Superintendent John Respet.

The inaugural enforcement effort signals a new focus for the Grande Prairie Police Service as it prepares to become the city’s Police of Primary Jurisdiction on October 21, 2026. That transition is happening two years ahead of schedule. GPPS says the success could lead to future traffic safety initiatives across the Peace Region.
