Residents of St. Paul will be able to recycle a much wider range of materials from the curb starting October 1, 2026, as Alberta’s enhanced recycling system arrives in the community.
The new program, managed by the not-for-profit Circular Materials, will accept glass containers, paper laminates such as coffee cups, foam packaging, empty aerosol containers, and flexible plastics and plastic film.
This change is part of Phase 2 of the province’s Extended Producer Responsibility framework, which shifts the cost of recycling away from municipalities and taxpayers. Instead, producers, the companies that supply packaging and paper products, will pay for the service.
The Town of St. Paul announced the launch on September 3, giving residents about four weeks to prepare for the expanded list of accepted materials.
Phase 1 of the provincial program began in April 2025 for communities that already had recycling services. Phase 2 expands to more communities and introduces a single, province-wide list of materials.
Circular Materials is also building a new recycling facility in Edmonton with WM to support the expanded operations across Alberta. That facility is expected to open in early 2027.
For more information about accepted materials and collection schedules, residents can visit the Circular Materials website or contact the Town of St. Paul.
