Banff, Alberta, is enjoying a stretch of unusually warm September weather this week, with sunny skies and highs of 23°C on Monday and 21°C on Tuesday, according to Environment Canada. Those temperatures are five to seven degrees above the historical average of about 16°C for this time of year.
The warm spell continues on Wednesday with a high of 17°C under a mix of sun and cloud, and Thursday will see similar conditions with a high of 15°C. But a change arrives Friday, when rain is expected and the temperature will drop sharply to just 8°C. There is also a 60 percent chance of showers Friday night, with an overnight low near zero.
The weekend brings a return to a mix of sun and cloud on Saturday with a high of 11°C, but Saturday night could dip to -2°C. No weather alerts are currently in effect.
For hikers and outdoor enthusiasts, the warm days through Thursday offer a great window to enjoy the park. Parks Canada reports most trails are in good condition, though some have wet and muddy sections. Visitors should also be aware of several area closures and bear warnings in effect, including around Lake Minnewanka and Skoki trails.
Those planning outdoor activities later in the week should prepare for cooler, wetter conditions and check trail updates before heading out.
