A 38-year-old man is facing multiple charges after police say he drove a stolen school bus into a drive-thru barrier in Ajax late on May 11, 2026.
The Durham Regional Police Service reported that officers responded to the McDonald’s located at Taunton Road West and Westney Road North at approximately 11:30 p.m. Witnesses had reported the bus being driven erratically before it collided with the drive-thru barrier. No injuries were reported as a result of the collision.
Following a traffic stop, officers arrested the driver, Tanner Jon Davis, who had no fixed address. According to police, Davis initially provided a false name before being identified. Investigators determined that the school bus had been stolen earlier that evening from a bus yard in North York, where the suspect allegedly broke in, stole radios and keys, and may have collided with other unoccupied buses while fleeing.
Davis is charged with impaired operation, impaired operation-exceed, two counts of possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, obstructing police, and three counts of breaching probation. He was held for a bail hearing.
The West Division Criminal Investigations Branch is continuing to look into the incident. Anyone with information or dash cam footage is encouraged to contact them at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 1905, or provide an anonymous tip to Durham Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
