Environment Canada issued a special weather statement for Ajax, Ontario, on March 17, 2026, as strong winds and lake-effect snow flurries create hazardous conditions across the region.
Strong westerly winds are currently gusting up to 80 km/h throughout the morning. These heavy gusts are expected to slowly diminish later today, but they still pose a risk of breaking tree branches and tossing loose outdoor objects.
The weather system is also bringing lake-effect flurries originating from Lake Huron and Georgian Bay into the southern Durham Region. These flurries can cause sudden drops in visibility and blowing snow, which may lead to dangerous driving conditions for local commuters.
Residents are encouraged to secure loose property and remain cautious while traveling. The weather agency also notes that these high winds could cause localized power outages in some neighbourhoods if branches fall on utility lines.
