A Durham Regional Police constable in training was killed in a motor vehicle collision on July 7, 2026, while on his way to the Ontario Police College near Aylmer, Ontario. Tyrone Magbitang, 27, was pronounced dead at the scene after the sedan he was driving collided with a transport truck at the intersection of College Line and Imperial Road in Malahide Township just before 11:20 a.m.
A second Durham police trainee who was a passenger in the car suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital in critical condition. The truck driver was not hurt, and the Ontario Provincial Police is investigating the crash.
“The Durham Regional Police Service is profoundly saddened by the tragic death of Constable in Training Tyrone Magbitang,” the service said in a statement. Magbitang joined the force as a special constable in May 2023 and was selected as a police constable recruit in April 2026 after completing his studies at Durham College.
Magbitang was also the founder of The Rookie Division Run Club, a group of first responders and community members who raise money for cancer research. Friends remembered him as a dedicated and genuine person who made a lasting impression on those around him.
A private funeral service is set for July 17, 2026, at his family’s request, limited to relatives, friends, and fellow first responders. Flags at all Durham Region facilities have been lowered to half-mast in his honour.
