The Town of Amherst, Nova Scotia, is inviting residents to share their thoughts on a proposed 36-unit apartment building at 1 Albion Street during a public meeting on March 30, 2026. The meeting will take place at 5:00 p.m. in the Town Hall Council Chambers at 98 East Victoria Street.
The proposed project includes the construction of a building featuring 24-unit and 12-unit residential components. This public session is the second step in the town’s six-step approval process, allowing neighbors to review the plans and provide input before the Planning Advisory Committee makes a recommendation to the Town Council.
Community members who are unable to attend the meeting can send written comments to Municipal Clerk Natalie LeBlanc at Town Hall or by email. These submissions must be handed in by 4:30 p.m. on Friday, March 27, 2026, to be considered during the review process.
This development is being considered under the town’s new Municipal Planning Strategy and Land Use Bylaw, which officially took effect on March 17, 2026. These updated rules were designed to prioritize housing variety and help the town meet a calculated requirement of building approximately 100 new homes every year to keep up with local population growth.
To support this growth, the town secured $2.2 million from the federal Housing Accelerator Fund in 2025 to help remove barriers to construction. The Albion Street proposal is part of a broader effort that has seen approximately 650 housing units approved across several local projects as the town works to expand its housing supply.
