Amherst Town Council is asking residents to weigh in on a proposed bylaw that would let ATVs ride into the downtown area via Eddy Street. The plan would connect to an existing designated trail on Eddy Road and a larger regional network, with ATV parking at 8 Eddy Street.
The public can attend a meeting on Monday, September 14, 2026, at 4:30 p.m. in Town Hall Council Chambers at 98 East Victoria Street. Written comments must be sent to Amherst municipal clerk Natalie LeBlanc by 4:30 p.m. on Friday, September 11.
Under Nova Scotia’s Road Trails Act, ATV riders on designated roads need a valid driver’s licence, registration, insurance, and a helmet. Passengers must be at least nine years old, and speed is capped at 25 km/h during daylight hours, from 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after dusk.
Several other Nova Scotia towns, including Oxford, Pictou, and Yarmouth, have already adopted similar bylaws. Amherst will consider extending access into the downtown commercial area, which supporters say could bring more tourism dollars to local shops and restaurants.
