The Town of Amherst began demolishing a derelict building at 77 Station Street on Monday, August 17, 2026, after the property owner failed to address serious safety concerns. The work, carried out by Baxter Trucking, is expected to take about 10 days, and drivers should expect periodic closures on Station Street during daytime hours.
Crews are working under Part XV of the Nova Scotia Municipal Government Act because the building was deemed dangerous and unsightly. The Town of Amherst says it pursued all legal avenues to get the owner to fix the property, but nothing happened. Demolition costs will be charged to the owner’s tax account.
Station Street will be closed periodically between Crescent Avenue and Abbott Street from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays until the demolition is finished. Residents and commuters should plan alternate routes during those times.
This is the latest step in Amherst’s effort to clean up blighted properties downtown. The same block was hit by a major fire in September 2020 that destroyed most of a century-old building housing Easy Storage and a wholesale fabric business.
