The Town of Banff is closing Banff Avenue and several nearby streets the morning of July 1, 2026, to make way for the Canada Day Parade, a change officials hope will ease the traffic snarls that have plagued recent big events in the mountain town.
Banff Avenue will be closed to all vehicles between Fox Street and Buffalo Street from 9 a.m. to noon, according to the Town of Banff. Parade staging will close Cougar Street and Fox Street from Squirrel Street to Marmot Crescent from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Lynx Street and Buffalo Street will also see closures, and the Norquay Road entrance to town will be closed from 9 a.m. to noon while the parade is underway.
The road closures are tied to a unanimous council vote on April 14 to shift the parade from the traditional afternoon slot to a 10 a.m. start. Council heard that the overwhelming traffic during the January 2026 skijoring event, when an estimated 44,000 vehicles entered Banff over two days, forced officials to turn away cars and hand out more than 200 parking tickets. That skijoring event has since been permanently cancelled.
Municipal leaders say the morning parade, followed by festivities in Central Park, is designed to spread out the crowds that fill the town each Canada Day. After drawing 4.5 million visitors in 2025, Banff continues to grapple with peak-day congestion, while the local Roam Transit system logged 2.3 million rides across Banff National Park last year.
The parade day closures come one day after the scheduled end of the Caribou Street reconstruction project. The intersection of Lynx Street and Caribou Street has been closed until June 30 for replacement of a nearly 100-year-old water main. Once that work wraps up, drivers will regain use of the intersection just in time for the holiday, but will still need to detour around the parade zone on July 1.
Residents and visitors should expect delays and are urged to plan alternate routes. Traffic will be rerouted to Muskrat Street while Banff Avenue is closed.
