June is Bike Month in Banff, and the town is putting on a full schedule of cycling events that aim to get everyone riding, no matter their age or ability. From free bike repair workshops and a pedal through local history to a rodeo for toddlers and an adaptive bike program for adults, there is something for every resident. Most activities are free for Banff residents, with registration open now through the Town’s online portal.
Two bike maintenance clinics are on the calendar this month, both taking place at the Fenlands Banff Recreation Centre at 100 Norquay Road. On June 2, Snowtips-Bactrax hosts a session for ages 12 and up, while on June 22, Community Cruisers runs a workshop for adults 18 and older. Each clinic costs $10 plus GST for non-residents, but Banff locals can take part at no charge.
For those who want to mix cycling with storytelling, the Historical Bike Tour of Banff rolls out on Thursday, June 18 from 6 to 8 p.m. The casual group ride winds through town while sharing fun facts about Banff’s past, giving participants fresh air, exercise, and a deeper connection to the place they call home.
Young riders get their own spotlight with the Tiny Tykes Bike Rodeo, designed for children ages 2 to 6, and the Banff Bike Bus encourages students to choose two wheels for getting to school. Meanwhile, the Big Red Ride makes cycling possible for adults with mobility or balance challenges. This four-person electric-assist bike, brought in from Holland at a cost of $30,000, offers battery help on hills and headwinds. The program is a partnership between the Town of Banff and Covenant Health, managed by Senior Support Coordinator Dani Roussy. Big Red Ride runs from June 4 through September 27, every Tuesday and Thursday from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.
The Big Red Ride was founded in 2017 by Community Cruisers board member Annie Tredray, and the non-profit continues to drive bike culture in the Bow Valley. Community Cruisers, started in 2007, works to make cycling an everyday transportation choice that boosts health, sustainability, and fairness across Banff and Canmore.
Volunteers are needed to help bring Bike Month to life, and anyone interested can contact [email protected] or call 403-762-1235. To sign up for any event, visit the Banff Bike Month page and use the Univerus Recreation portal. Whether you are fixing a flat, learning local lore, or trying an adaptive ride for the first time, June is the month to get on a bike in Banff.
