Banff is in for a stretch of mostly sunny and mild weather this week, according to Environment Canada. The forecast calls for daytime highs ranging from 25°C to 29°C from July 13 to 17, with clouds and a chance of showers arriving Friday.
Monday will be sunny with some afternoon clouds and southwest winds gusting up to 40 km/h. The high is expected to reach 25°C. Tuesday and Thursday will bring more sunshine and even warmer temperatures, with highs of 28°C and 29°C respectively. Wednesday will be cloudy with a high of 25°C. Overnight lows will dip to between 7°C and 10°C, which is typical for the mountain environment.
These temperatures are several degrees above the average July highs of 22°C for the Town of Banff, as Parks Canada notes. While the warm conditions are ideal for hiking and outdoor recreation, Health Canada warns that the UV index will be high to very high. Monday’s UV index is forecast at 7, and Tuesday’s at 8. Officials recommend sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, UV-blocking sunglasses, and wide-brimmed hats, especially between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Parks Canada also reminds residents and visitors that mountain weather can change quickly. Temperature drops about 1°C for every 200 metres of elevation gain, so hikers heading to higher trails should be prepared for cooler conditions.
This pleasant forecast comes during peak tourist season in Banff National Park, which welcomes over four million visitors each year.
