Residents in Barrhead, Alberta, will see several municipal services take a break for the Heritage Day long weekend. The Town of Barrhead posted a notice on July 6, 2026, outlining closures set for Monday, August 3.
The town hall at 5014-50 Avenue will be closed, along with recreational facilities. Regular garbage pickup will also be delayed. According to the town’s waste schedule, there is no collection on statutory holidays, with pickup moving to the days right after a holiday.
Heritage Day is not a statutory holiday in Alberta, so local governments and businesses can choose whether to close. The Town of Barrhead has decided to treat it as a civic holiday, giving most staff the day off.
Emergency services will continue as usual. The Barrhead Regional Fire Services, a partnership between the town and the County of Barrhead, runs 24/7 from the Joint Emergency Response Centre at 4635-61 Avenue. Fire Chief Gary Hove’s team responded to 455 calls in 2025, with medical help being the largest category.
