The Blue Heron Fair and Rodeo returns to Barrhead, Alberta, on Saturday, August 8, and Sunday, August 9, 2026, bringing two days of rodeo action, a community parade, and family fun to the Barrhead Ag Grounds.
Organized by the Barrhead and District Agricultural Society, the annual fair is a highlight of the summer calendar for families and rodeo fans from across the region. In 2025, the event was awarded Rodeo of the Year — for its 2024 edition — by contestants in the Wildrose Rodeo Association, an amateur rodeo circuit with more than 600 members and 30 to 40 events each season.
The rodeo performances run both days and will feature stock from Walking M Rodeo, whose animals earned the Triple Crown Stock of the Year award in 2024. Spectators can see champions like Buckwheat, the bareback horse of the year, and Just a Dream, the bull of the year, as local competitors vie for prizes.
Saturday kicks off with the Blue Heron Parade at 11 a.m. along Main Street. This year’s theme, Around the World in 80 Floats, promises a colourful procession. Also on the schedule: a horse show, a slo-pitch tournament, a beach volleyball tournament hosted by the Barrhead Knights Volleyball Club starting August 7, a log competition, and a kids zone with a mechanical bull and bouncy castles. Food vendors will be on site throughout the weekend. Saturday night wraps up with a cabaret featuring Alberta country artist Travis Dolter.
Admission is $20 per day or $35 for a weekend pass for adults 18 and older. Youth aged 6 to 17 pay $12 per day or $20 for the weekend, and children 5 and under get in free. The fair survived a pandemic cancellation in 2020 and returned the following year under scaled-down rules before bouncing back to its full format. Now it stands as one of the largest community gatherings in Barrhead each summer.
