A 41-year-old local man was arrested in downtown Barrie early on April 2, 2026, following a public disturbance on Dunlop Street East that included reports of assaults on pedestrians.
According to the Barrie Police Service, officers responded to the area shortly before midnight on April 1, 2026. Witnesses reported that a man was behaving aggressively, placing several pedestrians in headlocks and damaging personal property. Upon the arrival of police, the suspect discarded a bag containing suspected cocaine onto the roadway.
When officers attempted to make an arrest, the man fled on foot. Following a brief pursuit, a struggle took place, during which an officer was struck in the face. The suspect was eventually taken into custody and transported to Barrie Police Headquarters on Fairview Road, where he was held to await a bail hearing.
The man now faces four charges, including causing a disturbance, possession of cocaine, assaulting a peace officer with intent to resist arrest, and failing to comply with a probation order. Police confirmed that no serious injuries were reported among the members of the public who were involved in the initial incident.
