This risk is especially high because the ground is currently frozen or saturated and cannot absorb the incoming water.
The rain is expected to begin Tuesday night and continue throughout Wednesday. Weather officials also warn of a risk of thunderstorms and freezing rain overnight, which could create dangerous travel conditions for residents and drivers in the area.
The City of Barrie uses drainage systems to manage large amounts of water, but low-lying areas are still prone to localized flooding. The Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority is also monitoring water levels to help coordinate safety alerts if conditions in the watershed become unstable.
Residents are encouraged to watch for weather updates and stay away from areas where water tends to collect. Heavy downpours can lead to immediate runoff and issues like basement flooding or sewer backups in some parts of the community.
