Residents of Beaumont and other communities in the Edmonton area who tune into Global News for their local updates will soon see a major change behind the scenes. Corus Entertainment announced that it is centralizing production of its Global News Edmonton and Calgary newscasts at its Toronto hub, with the move taking effect by the end of August 2026.
Annie Arnone, a spokesperson for Corus, confirmed the shift and said the company remains committed to local news delivery in both cities. While some on-air personalities and other staff have lost their jobs, Arnone said additional roles are being added to continue providing news programming. The exact number of job cuts has not been disclosed.
The change comes as Corus faces significant financial pressure. The company reported a net loss of $36.5 million in the third quarter of fiscal 2026, with television revenue dropping 16 percent compared to the same period in 2025. Corus is also seeking approval from the CRTC for a recapitalization plan that would see lenders forgive about $500 million in debt in exchange for 99 percent ownership of a new parent company.
Critics have raised concerns about the impact on local journalism. Conservative MP Stephanie Kusie, who represents Calgary-Midnapore, said centralizing regional newscasts means the local angle will be lost and warned about increasing media concentration. Unifor, the union representing affected workers, called the cuts part of a trend creating “news deserts” across Canada.
For viewers in Sherwood Park and Beaumont, the shift means the Global Edmonton newscast they rely on each night will be assembled in Toronto rather than in Alberta. Corus says local news coverage will continue, but the production work is now being done from outside the province.
