Brandon, Manitoba, is committing up to $2.28 million to cover flood mitigation and recovery work, the city’s council decided at a July 27, 2026, meeting. The money comes from four city reserves while the province is expected to reimburse just over two-thirds of the cost.
The spending will be pulled from the following city reserve funds: $1,550,000 from the Fiscal Contingency Reserve, $500,000 from the Diking and Flood Control Reserve, $180,000 from the Water Reserve, and $50,000 from the Wastewater Reserve.
The City of Brandon expects the province to pay back just over two-thirds of the total through Disaster Financial Assistance. Council had already approved applications for that assistance at a July 6 meeting for both the June 29 heavy rain and the broader 2026 flood event.
The flood fight started after a major rainstorm on June 29, 2026. The Assiniboine River then rose about 2.3 metres in less than a week and peaked around July 12 and 13. The city declared a state of local emergency on July 4 as it scrambled to reinforce dikes, place sandbags, and install pumps.
Brandon residents avoided large-scale flooding this year thanks in large part to the dike network built after the devastating 2011 flood. Recovery crews are now removing temporary flood protection and fixing drainage systems as the river recedes.
