Residents of the Rural Municipality of Cornwallis have an opportunity to review and comment on the municipality’s proposed spending for the upcoming year. The municipal council has released its draft 2026 budget and is hosting a public hearing on April 14, 2026, to gather feedback from ratepayers.
The hearing allows community members to examine the municipality’s financial priorities and proposed tax levels before the budget is finalized. The draft document was made available for public review on March 31, 2026.
The meeting will take place at the municipal office, located on Veterans Way just east of the City of Brandon, behind the RCMP station. Residents can visit the office during regular business hours, which are Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to noon and from 1:00 pm to 4:30 pm, to view the documents.
This budget process takes place under the guidance of a newly settled leadership team, including Reeve Mike Waddell, who was elected in December 2025, and Chief Administrative Officer Teri Scaife, who joined the municipality in late November 2025. The council also includes four councillors elected under a ward system: Terry Ross and Shane Drohan representing Ward 1, and Ed Maxwell and Bob Brown representing Ward 2.
The discussion regarding local spending comes as the Province of Manitoba recently announced an increase to total base support for municipalities, adding approximately $6 million in funding as part of its own 2026 budget. The Rural Municipality of Cornwallis, which has a population of 4,568, encompasses approximately 500 square kilometres of land surrounding the City of Brandon.
