Environment Canada is keeping a heat warning in place for Brandon, Manitoba, as sticky and high temperatures will continue through the week. The warning first went out on Saturday, July 25, and remains in effect with daytime highs expected in the high 20s and low 30s and humidex values reaching 39 on the hottest days.
The 7-day forecast for Brandon shows Tuesday and Wednesday will be the most uncomfortable, with mainly sunny skies and afternoon highs of 31 degrees coupled with a humidex of 39. Nights will not offer much relief, as lows are expected to stay in the upper teens, between 14 and 18 degrees.
Some cooling is possible later in the week. Thursday and Friday bring a 60 percent chance of showers, with highs dipping to 26 degrees by Friday. Temperatures are then forecast to climb back to 29 degrees for Saturday and Sunday.
This stretch of heat follows a record-breaking July across southern Manitoba. Earlier this month, Brandon sweltered through a day that hit 34.2 degrees and felt like a scorching 46 with the humidity. The province also saw several weather records fall, including in McCreary, where the mercury reached 36.5 degrees on July 12, breaking a mark set back in 1979.
Health officials are reminding residents to drink plenty of water, check on older neighbours and people living alone, and avoid tiring outdoor activity during the hottest afternoon hours. Manitoba’s Heat Alert Response System encourages local partners to open cooling stations, hand out water, and keep public pools open longer when heat warnings take effect.
