Residents in Brantford, Ontario, are facing a morning of difficult travel and high winds on Tuesday, March 17, 2026. Environment Canada issued a special weather statement warning of wind gusts that could reach up to 80 km/h. These winds are expected to be paired with lake effect snow flurries, which may suddenly make it difficult for drivers to see the road.
The weather agency noted that the strong gusts could snap tree branches or blow away loose outdoor items. Residents are encouraged to be careful of potential power outages and rapidly changing conditions on local roads throughout the morning. The wind is expected to slowly calm down as the day progresses.
While the city deals with the wind, the City of Brantford is also moving forward with a long-term project to address river safety. Along with the Grand River Conservation Authority, officials are conducting an environmental study to find ways to reduce the risk of flooding caused by ice jams.
This ongoing study was launched to help protect the community from future flood events like the one that occurred in February 2018. The current work focuses on researching different engineering solutions to keep the Grand River flowing safely during the winter and spring months.
