Bridgewater, Nova Scotia now has dedicated housing for healthcare workers, with Premier Tim Houston and Housing Minister John White announcing on July 28, 2026, that 20 new townhouse units on Glen Allan Drive are complete and fully occupied. The $6-million project, funded through the province’s housing for healthcare program, aims to help recruit and keep healthcare professionals in the community.
The townhouses, which include one-, two-, and three-bedroom options, are managed by the Housing Trust of Nova Scotia under its mixed-income model. That means rents are based on household income, making them easier to afford for healthcare workers.
The province recognized that when workers cannot find a place to live, it is harder to attract and keep healthcare staff, which directly impacts local care. “This initiative supports both recruitment and retention,” said Angela Bishop, CEO of the Housing Trust of Nova Scotia.
Bridgewater is the healthcare hub of the South Shore, home to the South Shore Regional Hospital, which is currently undergoing a $115.7-million redevelopment. Ensuring healthcare workers have nearby housing is a key part of supporting the growing medical services in the area.
The Bridgewater site is one of several underway through the housing for healthcare program, a $45-million provincial investment. Other projects are in the works or already completed in communities like Guysborough, Lunenburg, Port Hawkesbury, Canso, Liverpool, and New Glasgow.
