Burlington residents can help keep the waterfront litter-free before the school year begins at a Back-to-School Beach Clean Up on Saturday, August 29, 2026, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in Burlington, Ontario. Hosted by BurlingtonGreen, the free event invites individuals, families, and groups to pick up litter along the beach and surrounding areas.
The clean up comes just 10 days before students in the Halton District School Board head back to class on Tuesday, September 8, 2026. For high school students, the event is a final chance to earn volunteer hours toward Ontario’s 40-hour community involvement requirement for graduation. Students can begin accumulating hours as early as the summer between Grade 8 and Grade 9, and BurlingtonGreen notes that signed waivers are required for most volunteer opportunities.
Since 2011, more than 152,500 participants have joined BurlingtonGreen’s Community Clean Up program, removing litter from parks, streams, schoolyards, and neighbourhoods across the city. This year, the organization aims to see 14,000 people take part in its cleanup events. Free supplies, including bags and gloves, will be provided to all volunteers.
Those interested in joining the August 29 clean up must pre-register through BurlingtonGreen’s volunteer page. No prior experience is necessary, and BurlingtonGreen encourages anyone 14 and older to participate.
