MLA Janis Irwin is set to speak about how education and politics affect the lives of queer residents at the University of Alberta Augustana campus in Camrose, Alberta. The event will take place on March 13, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. at the Augustana Forum Cafe Stage.
Janis Irwin has deep roots in the local community, having attended the school when it was known as Camrose Lutheran College. Before entering politics, she worked as a social studies teacher in Bawlf and served as a vice-principal in Forestburg.
The talk is being organized by the Augustana Students’ Association as part of a week-long Pride celebration. The presentation will focus on inclusion in schools and how provincial policies impact the safety and belonging of queer youth.
Irwin previously served as the Executive Director of High School Curriculum for Alberta Education. Her visit follows provincial policy changes introduced in 2024 that require schools to get parental consent before students 15 and under can change their names or pronouns.
The Pride celebration also includes a session with historian Darrin Hagen on March 9, 2026. A drag competition is also set to take place on the campus later in the day on March 13.
