By the end of August 2026, the Global News Calgary newscasts that Chestermere residents watch each evening will be assembled in Toronto. Corus Entertainment, the parent company of Global News, is centralizing production from Calgary and Edmonton to its Toronto hub.
The move means an undisclosed number of jobs are being cut, including on-air staff. Corus says it remains committed to local news, but the actual putting-together of the broadcasts will happen thousands of kilometres away in Ontario.
Corus has been struggling financially, reporting a $36.5 million net loss in its most recent quarter. Revenue was down 16 percent compared to the same period in 2025. The company is awaiting CRTC approval for a $500 million debt-for-equity plan that would hand 99 percent ownership to lenders.
Unifor, the union representing broadcast workers, has urged the CRTC to tie any approval to keeping local outlets open and protecting jobs. Conservative MP Stephanie Kusie, who represents Chestermere as part of Calgary-Midnapore, says centralizing the newscasts means the local angle will be lost and raises concerns about who controls the message.
The Corus announcement comes just nine days after Rogers Sports and Media cut 230 positions and shut down Calgary’s 660 NewsRadio and Sportsnet 960 The Fan. For Chestermere households that rely on CICT-DT Channel 2, the nightly Alberta news will still feature local reporters, but the control room pulling it all together will be based outside the province.
